Buongiorno and McKrell will investigate transient boiling heat transfer phenomena under rapidly escalating heat fluxes, at time scales of milliseconds that are typical of reactivity initiated accidents. The researchers will utilize state-of-the-art diagnostics such as infrared thermometry, high-speed video and particle image velocimetry to gain insight into the physical phenomena and generate a database that can be used for development and validation of models of transient boiling heat transfer in both pool and flow boiling conditions. This will ultimately reduce the uncertainties in predicting the safety margins in both design and analyses of CEA research reactors such as ORPHEE and RJH.
