The Boston Globe

In a video short, The Boston Globe’s Daniel Kool spotlights “The Living Bucentaur,” a parade of 250 people dressed in repurposed sail cloth to celebrate the opening of the School of Architecture and Plannings’ new home in the Metropolitan Warehouse. “In 1916, when MIT moved from Boston to Cambridge, they built this elaborate barge called Bucentaur. It was white and it had this beautiful decoration with angels and stucco and everyone was wearing costumes and waving tea squares,” says Prof. Azra Aksamija. “This project is in a way a reenactment.”

Timothy Carney ‘66, “a diplomat who relished difficult assignments in war-torn countries and pushed against bureaucratic restrictions,” died on Aug. 10 at age 82, reports The New York Times’ Adam Nossiter. “Tim was very deeply committed everywhere he served,” says his wife, Victoria Butler. “Everywhere we went he got to know the people where we lived. He believed very strongly in soft power versus hard power. He was an old school kind of diplomat.”

Priti Paul ‘90, director of Apeejay Surrendra Group, and her sister Priya, chairperson and executive director of Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels, are honored on Forbes’ list of “Women Hospitality Leaders Who Should’ve Been In The Room,” by Jacques Ledbetter. Paul has led Apeejay’s “real estate and design work and helped shape projects across the family enterprise,” writes Ledbetter. “Together, they [Priti and Priya] represent the ownership, design and operating sides of hospitality in India.”

Prof. Jonathan Weissman speaks with The New York Times’ Emily Baumgaertner Nunn about epigenome editing, including a single injection that would silence a gene in the liver that destroys receptors responsible for clearing LDL cholesterol. “This is sort of the ultimate one-and-done treatment,” says Weissman. “I don’t think we know enough to be able to do it at the moment, but it is not so far off from what’s imaginable.”  

The Next Big Idea Club

For The Next Big Idea Club, Prof. Paul Osterman outlines the pillars of his new book, “Disposable Workers: The Transformation of Employment.” “The rise of disposable work is allowing companies to gain flexibility and cut costs while shedding responsibility for their workers,” writes Osterman. “We need guardrails to keep that flexibility from coming at the expense of workers and the public.”

Prof. Gary Gensler joins Bloomberg’s “Sustainability Currents and Votes and Verdicts” to discuss how the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) can manage investor protection, capital formation and fair, orderly and efficient markets. “I would say [to the SEC], make sure that the US treasury market is functioning really well,” says Gensler. “Move forward with the treasury market reforms that were bipartisan. Keep making sure that the equity market is efficient. Keep making sure that we’re the world’s leading equity market.”

MIT’s financial aid offerings, including free tuition for families earning below $200,000 a year, is highlighted by Forbes' Asia Alexander. “Families earning below $100,000 pay nothing toward the full cost of attendance — tuition, housing, dining, fees and an allowance for books and personal expenses are covered,” writes Alexander. “MIT calculates that roughly 80% of American households fall under its tuition-free line.”

MIT researchers have discovered that peptides “not only survive in highly concentrated sulfuric acid but take on stable 3D conformations too,” writes Chemical & Engineering News’ Fionna Samuels. “The project started with a new collaboration between [Prof. Sara] Seager and the MIT chemist [Prof.] Mei Hong,” notes Samuels. “In the years since finding phosphine signals in Venusian clouds, Seager had been working her way through the building blocks of life—nucleic acids, amino acids, and lipids—to see if any survived concentrated acid exposure.”

President Sally Kornbluth and Governor Maura Healey will kick off the festivities at MIT’s inaugural Future Fest, which aims to bring “together leaders across higher education, government and tech to explore the future of science, technology, art and design across MIT's campus for five days,” writes the Boston Business Journal’s Stephen MacLeod. The festival will also include the Cambridge Science Carnival, featuring “100 booths and activities, and other demonstrations, including a robot petting zoo, a floating installation at the MIT Sailing Pavilion known as the Adaptive Archipelago and the public unveiling of MIT’s new design hub and home of MIT's School of Architecture and Planning, the Met Warehouse.”
