Dear Members of the MIT community,
We write briefly to let you know that after discussion with the chairs of CGP, CAP and CUP, and with the academic and student deans, we have determined that classes will be canceled this Wednesday, April 24, in order to allow a day of reflection for the MIT community upon the loss of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier. Faculty who desire to recover lost class time may schedule a make-up class on Friday, May 17 (using the schedule for Friday classes only).
As you are aware, MIT will host a memorial service on Wednesday that will bring together thousands of law-enforcement officers from across the country, members of the MIT community, and honored guests including Vice President Joe Biden. This ceremony will be open to members of the MIT community, and we expect to provide viewing stations around the Institute for those who are unable to attend the ceremony but wish to observe. We believe this will be a special gathering—and we hope that later in the day on Wednesday, departments, labs, living groups and other units will consider having small, informal gatherings of your own to enable members of the community to share perspectives.
