MIT ranks fifth in latest Times Higher Education rankings

Institute places No. 1 in discipline rankings for social sciences, life sciences.

MIT has been ranked the No. 5 university in the world in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, which were released this week.

In rankings by discipline, MIT was ranked first in the world for social sciences and life sciences, third in engineering and technology, and seventh in physical sciences.

In last year’s overall rankings, MIT was ranked seventh; in 2010, the Institute was ranked third. Caltech was ranked first overall in the THE rankings for the second year in a row.

The THE rankings are computed based on 13 performance indicators in five areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. The full methodology can be viewed on the THE website.
