MIT also saw this provision as an opportunity to simplify the process by which faculty submit their textbook information in order to have as much information as possible available to students by pre-registration of each semester. The intent of Congress was to make textbook information more readily available as early as possible in order for students to have time to shop around for their course materials and find potential savings.
Not only is this information listed in the Online Subject Listing and Schedule, but this new information also feeds into other applications that students use to get information on their course materials such as Stellar, CoursePicker and BooksPicker.
This information will be kept current through a new faculty-driven review and update process, which occurs at each academic term. Any updates are automatically propagated to the Online Subject Listing and the other applications to ensure the information is consistent across MIT. For the initial launch, this enhanced system provides textbook information for approximately 300 subjects. Expectation is that faculty will be adding information for the remaining subjects for Spring 2011.
