The Provost's Office has announced the establishment of a new chair, the Morton (1942) and Claire Goulder and Family Professorship in Environmental Systems. Professor David H. Marks, director of the Center for Environmental Initiatives, is the inaugural holder of the chair.
Dr. Marks is also co-chair with Chancellor Lawrence Bacow of the Council on the Environment and a coordinator of the Alliance for Global Sustainability. He teaches and advises in the Technology and Policy Program and is a founding member of the Engineering Systems Division. His area of expertise is in how large-scale infrastructure systems are organized and managed, with special concern for anticipating and mitigating larger-scale environmental and economic impacts.
Professor Marks received the BS in 1962 and the MS in 1964 (both from Cornell University), and the PhD in 1969 from Johns Hopkins University after serving as a commissioned officer in the US Public Health Service working on water quality problems in the Delaware estuary. He joined the MIT faculty in 1969 as an assistant professor, was promoted to associate professor in 1972 and full professor in 1975. He was head of the Department of Civil Engineering from 1985-92.
