In separate drinking incidents over the Columbus Day weekend, a 20-year-old Rutgers University student died in New Jersey and a 21-year-old Stanford University student is reported in fair condition in California.
Rutgers student Jason Greco of Riverton, NJ, who fell down a flight of stairs following a night of drinking at an off-campus bar, died October 12 after being taken off life support at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, a Rutgers spokesperson said.
Mr. Greco, a third-year engineering student, returned intoxicated to his Theta Chi fraternity house and fell down the stairs on the night of October 8 after drinking with friends at a New Brunswick, NJ bar near the Rutgers campus, the local prosecutor reported. At his family's request, his blood alcohol level was not released.
At Stanford, a member of Phi Delta Theta was found unconscious outside his fraternity house on October 10 and taken to Stanford Hospital suffering from serious head injuries, apparently incurred in a fall from a second-floor balcony. He was in serious but stable condition when admitted.
At the time, the fraternity was already on probation for an alcohol-related incident. A preliminary investigation alleged the fraternity served alcohol at an October 9-10 event, violating the terms of its probation. As a result of this allegation, Stanford Dean of Students Marc Wais has notified the fraternity that it will lose its on-campus housing privileges at the end of the fall quarter.
