The appointments of three faculty members to career development chairs has been announced by Provost Mark S. Wrighton.
Assistant Professor Mark V. Matthews of the Department of Mathematics has been selected to be the next holder of the Cecil and Ida Green Career Development Professorship.
Associate Professor Jonathan A. Fox of the Department of Political Science has been selected to be one of the next holders of the Mitsui Career Development Professorship.
Assistant Professor Lawrence Vale of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning has been selected to be the other holder of the Mitsui Career Development Professorship.
The Green CD chair was established by Mr. and Mrs. Green to recognize and encourage excellence in teaching.
Professor Matthews, an applied mathematician, has been at MIT since 1991. He holds the BA (1983) from Harvard and the MS (1988) and the PhD (1991) from Stanford University. He has taught subjects in probability and statistics, statistics for applications, statistical computing and multivariate analysis.
The Mitsui Career Development Professorship was established in 1980 by Mitsui Group, one of the oldest and largest industrial organizations in Japan, to encourage cultural and technological exchange between the United States and Japan.
Professor Fox has teaching and research interests in democratization, public policy and social movements in developing countries, sustainable rural development and agarian reform. He holds the BA in politics (1980) from Princeton University, where he minored in East Asian Studies, and the PhD in political science (1986) from MIT.
Professor Vale, who has been at MIT since 1988, holds the BA in American studies (1981) from Amherst College, the SM in architecture studies (1988) from MIT, the PhD in international relations (1985) from New College, Oxford University, England. He is director of his department's undergraduate program.
