An advance screening of portions of "Gods and Generals," a new film by the director of "Gettysburg," will be held at MIT Monday morning, followed by a question-and-answer session. The event is being hosted by Professor Merritt Roe Smith, a civil war expert in MIT's Program in Science, Technology and Society. Smith's research focuses on the history of American industrialization and the role of the military in technological innovation.
"Gods and Generals," which was written and directed by Ron Maxwell, is scheduled to open nationwide on Feb. 21. The film is a prequel to Maxwell's 1993 film "Gettysburg," a sweeping epic that portrays the Civil War's three-day battle at Gettysburg that has become a classic among historians and Civil War reenactors. The films are based on novels written by father and son Michael Shaara ("The Killer Angels") and Jeff Shaara ("Gods and Generals").
