'Shadow Bang' praised
A new Cantaloupe Music recording of "Shadow Bang," featuring the Bang on a Can All-Stars and founding member Professor Evan Ziporyn, was called an "inspired multilayered score" in a review by Gramophone's Ken Smith. "Sometimes with driving intensity, other times with floating ethereality, Ziporyn's music traces its roots to the point when Steve Reich first began borrowing structural principles of southeast Asian music. By adding his own take on that music's original context," says Smith, "Ziporyn repays the loan, with interest." The world premiere of "Shadow Bang" took place in October 2001 in Kresge Little Theater.
Mural designs sought
Michaelangelo did it in the Sistine Chapel, John Singer Sargent did it in the Boston Public Library and Diego Rivera did it in Mexico City. These artists created murals and now MIT students can do it too. The deadline for the first Student Mural Project is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Open to MIT students only, all submissions must be original two-dimensional creations. The winning design will be reproduced as a high-quality wall-sized print measuring seven feet high by eight to 10 feet wide, to be displayed in Building E15 for one year. Art sale deadline nears
The deadline is Thursday, Sept. 25 for the Sidney-Pacific Graduate Residence student Art Exhibit/Sale. Works by MIT students will be presented as part of an Oct. 4 event which will include a barbecue and dance party. Proposals should include the kind and number of items to exhibit/sell, stands or display devices required for displays, and an estimate of funds needed to build the stands, prepare for exhibits, etc. For more information, e-mail ritasaad@mit.edu.
