The Silverwood Trio, featuring soprano/flutist Cindy Woolley, a technical assistant in the Department of Biology, will perform trios by Mozart and Manziarly and songs by Andr� Previn on Saturday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Ann Church (68 St. Stephen St., Boston).
The Auros Group for New Music will perform "Embers," Professor Peter Child's chamber opera based on text by Samuel Beckett this Friday (May 17) at 8 p.m. at the Longy School of Music's Pickman Hall (27 Garden St., Cambridge). The program also includes "Quad," a work written by Beckett in 1982 for four robed and hooded dancers/walkers with four percussionists. Prior to the concert, Beckett's film, "Film" (1963), starring Buster Keaton, will be screened. Tickets cost $15, $10 for students and seniors, but members of the MIT community can attend for free by presenting a valid ID at the door. Info: (617) 323-5444.
The New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini revisited the Metropolitan Opera's revival of Institute Professor John Harbison's opera, "The Great Gatsby," calling the score "one of the strongest written by an American composer in some time." The production ran April 26-May 11.
