C-SPAN2 will air an "About Books" segment taped at the October 7 "authors@mit" event with Steven Pinker, professor of psychology and author of How the Mind Works, at approximately 9:50pm on Sunday, Nov. 16 and again three hours later at 12:50am on Monday, Nov. 17. Professor Pinker is director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and is also author of The Language Instinct (1993). C-SPAN also expects to tape "Printing Press or Holodeck?" -- a November 13 event with senior research scientist Janet Murray, author of Hamlet on the Holodeck: The Future of Narrative in Cyberspace, and Sven Birkets, author of The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age. The event is at 7pm tomorrow in the Humanities Library.

Proteus the Penguin Boat -- a vehicle propelled by two "oscillating foils," or flippers -- has generated headlines around the world since taking its maiden voyage down the Charles River last spring (MIT Tech Talk, April 3, 1997). The November issue of Popular Science features the latest story on the work conducted by Professor Michael Triantafyllou of ocean engineering and colleagues. The magazine included an artist's concept of a motor boat propelled by oscillating foils. The researchers "are hoping to improve the efficiency of ships by mimicking the swimming technique of penguins," the magazine reported.
