George N. Butzow '51 of Mound, MN, was elected by the Corporation last Friday (Dec. 1), to complete the five-year term of the late Hajime Mitarai, who died in September.
After receiving the SB in general science from MIT, Mr. Butzow served two years in the US Air Force Research & Development Command and then joined Research Inc., a startup R&D company, in 1953. He became vice president of its MTS Division in 1964; two years later, the division became a separate company. In 1972 Mr. Butzow became president and CEO of MTS Systems Corp., from which he retired in 1994.
Mr. Butzow is regional chairman of the MIT Educational Council. He received the Institute's George B. Morgan Award in 1991. He has several advisory roles with the University of Minnesota and was a member of the US Department of Commerce Industrial Policy Advisory Committee from 1983-87. He also holds directorships in a number of companies.
Mr. Butzow's term on the Corporation runs until 2000.
