Members of the MIT engineering faculty receive many awards in recognition of their scholarship, service, and overall excellence. The School of Engineering periodically recognizes their achievements by highlighting the honors, prizes, and medals won by faculty working in our academic departments, labs, and centers.
- Hal Abelson of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received an honorary doctorate of education from the Hong Kong University of Education on Dec. 6, 2021.
- Saman Amarasinghe of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received the Outstanding Paper Award at the Fourth Conference on Machine Learning and Systems on Jan. 27 and the Best Paper Award at the International Symposium on Code Generation and Optimization on Feb. 7.
- Regina Barzilay of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was named a Susan G. Komen Scholar and was elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows on Feb. 18.
- Irmgard Bischofberger of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows on Feb. 18.
- Lydia Bourouiba of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science was elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows on Feb. 18.
- Markus Buehler of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering received the 2022 James R. Rice Medal from the Society of Engineering Science on Jan. 25.
- Vladimir Bulovic of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was named a 2021 fellow of the National Academy of Inventors on Dec. 10, 2021.
- Sallie W. Chisholm of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering received the 2022 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Earth and Environmental Science on Nov. 29, 2021.
- Connor Coley of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science won the NSF Career Award on Jan. 6 and received the 2021 Bayer Early Excellence in Science Award for Chemistry on March 15.
- Luca Daniel of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was named a 2022 IEEE Fellow on Jan. 12.
- Dirk Englund of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was named a 2022 Optica Fellow on Nov. 23, 2021.
- Lee Gehrke of the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science received a fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology on Feb. 15.
- Paula Hammond of the Department of Chemical Engineering was named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors on Dec. 7, 2021.
- Philip Isola of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received a Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering on Oct. 14, 2021.
- Robert Langer of the Department of Chemical Engineering received the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Biology and Biomedicine on Jan. 26.
- Ju Li of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering received the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society Fellow Award on March 2.
- Harvey F. Lodish of the Department of Biological Engineering received the Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Hematology on Dec. 12, 2021.
- Muriel Médard of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received the COMSNETS 2022 Best Research Demo Award on Jan. 27 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Aalborg in Denmark on March 23.
- Carlos Portela of the Department of Mechanical Engineering won the 2022 Faculty Early Career Development Award on Jan. 21.
- Devavrat Shah of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was named a 2022 IEEE Fellow on Jan. 12.
- Peter So of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows on Feb. 18.
- Vivienne Sze of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received the 2T5 Mid-Career Achievement Award on Nov. 4, 2021.
- Franz-Josef Ulm of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was named to the National Academy of Engineering on Feb. 9.
- Vinod Vaikuntanathan of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science won the 2021 IEEE FOCS Test of Time Award on Feb. 7.
