UPDATED 8:30 pm: Due to the snowstorm, the MIT Campus and Lincoln Laboratory will remain closed until the morning of Friday, December 14. Third-shift employees are not expected to come to work on Thursday, December 13, unless they are essential personnel. All employees are expected to report to work for their normal shifts on Friday, December 14.
Alison Alden, vice president of human resources, has announced in an e-mail to staff, faculty and students that MIT will have an early release at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13. The letter is printed below:
SUBJECT: Early Release at 2:00 pm for Thursday, December 13, 2007; Pay Policies for Support and Service Staff
Due to the predicted heavy snow starting in the early afternoon, the Institute will have an early release today, Thursday Dec. 13, at 2:00 p.m. Nonessential employees currently at work may leave at 2:00 p.m. Departments are expected to use their discretion in allowing employees who have child care issues or long commutes to leave before 2:00.
Employees on the second shift who would normally work today are not expected to report to work, except for essential personnel. A decision about work for employees on the third shift (other than essential personnel) will be made later, depending on the severity and duration of the storm, and will be available on the MIT home page and on the SNOW line (617-253-SNOW or 617-253-7669).
The storm is expected to end around 7-10 p.m., and MIT expects to be open as usual tomorrow, Friday Dec. 14.
Please note that the MIT Community Winter Break, originally scheduled for today at 4 pm in Lobby 7, has been rescheduled on Monday, Dec. 17, from 4 - 5 p.m. in Lobby 7.
Pay policies under Section 5.8 for the early release are as follows:
Employees on the day shift who worked on December 13
Full and part-time employees who came to work on December 13 will be paid at their regular rates to the end of their normal work schedule. The hours of early release are paid at straight time, plus any
applicable shift differential.
Employees on evening shifts not required to work on December 13
Those employees on evening (or second) shift whose shifts begin at or after 2:00 p.m. and who are not required to work because of the early release will be paid at their regular rate as if they had worked their normal schedules.
Employees on night shift: Status to be determined
A decision about a closing for the night shift will be made later, depending on the storm's effect. A report will be available on the MIT home page and on the snow line by 9:00 p.m.
Part-time employees on the regular payroll will also be paid for the hours they would have worked, but employees on MITemps who were scheduled to work beyond 2:00 p.m. will not be paid.
Only employees regularly scheduled to work on the day of the closing/early release will be eligible for early release pay. An employee on leave for any reason, including sick or other authorized leave with or without pay, is not eligible to receive early release pay.
The Payroll Office will send instructions for how to report hours for the early release/emergency closing hours.
If you have questions concerning this pay policy, you may consult Section 5.8 of the MIT Personnel Policy Manual or the applicable collective bargaining agreement, or contact your Human Resources Officer.
