World AIDS Day scheduled for Dec. 5 in Lobby 10

The MIT Women'a League will coordinate the Institute's observance of World AIDS Day with booths and a chocolate buffet in Lobby 10 on Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As with last year's event, visitors will be able to view a panel from AIDS Memorial Quilt as well as MIT quilt, sample Chocolate Buffet offerings (desserts donated by local bakeries, restaurants, catering services and members of the MIT community), learn about AIDS prevention and treatment, receive a free red AIDS ribbon and enter a raffle with prizes donated by local hotels and restaurants. (Last year's raffle raised $3,428 to support the Children's Hospital AIDS Program.)

MIT's MedLINKS, the Children's Hospital AIDS Program, the Boston Medical Center Children's AIDS Program (beneficiary of this year's raffle), Community Servings and the Pendulum Project will have information tables. Representatives of the MIT Black Women's Alliance, the African Students Association and the LBGT Issues Group will also participate.

MIT's observance of World AIDS Day is on Dec. 5 rather than the official day (Dec. 1), which falls on a Saturday this year. World AIDS Day began in 1988 as a result of a call by the World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programs for AIDS Prevention to open channels of communication, strengthen the exchange of information and forge a spirit of social tolerance.

Anyone who would like to help with this year's event should contact Sis de Bordenave in the Women's League office at x3-3656 or wleague@mit.edu. Volunteers are needed to bake, sell buffet tickets, and staff the buffet.
