Rich to give Irwin Sizer lecture

Professor Alexander Rich will deliver the Irwin Sizer Memorial Lecture on Monday, Nov. 20 in the Whitehead Institute Auditorium from 4-5pm.

Dr. Rich, the William Thompson Sedgwick Professor of Biophysics, will discuss "A Role for Left-Handed, Double-Stranded Nucleic Acids in a Right-Handed World: Editing RNA." He recently won the $250,000 Bower Award for Achievement in Science from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.

Professor Sizer, a pioneer in molecular biology, died on September 11 at age 90. He was the head of the Department of Biology from 1957-67 and played a key role in the development of Whitaker College, serving as president of the Whitaker Health Science Fund from 1974-90. He was the dean of the Graduate School from 1967-76, after which he returned to the Department of Biology as professor emeritus and instructor until he retired in 1996.

The public is invited to the lecture. A reception will follow in the Whitehead cafeteria.
