Prior to embarking on a European tour, the MIT Symphony Orchestra (MITSO) will present its last MIT concert for the 1999-2000 season on Friday, May 12 at Kresge Auditorium at 8:30pm. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Dante Anzolini, the program will feature Senior Lecturer David Deveau as soloist in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 and Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe. Admission is $2 at the door.

The itinerary for the Central European tour will include performances in Brno, Budapest, Vienna and Prague. The performance in Prague's National House, arranged by special invitation from the Czech Nuclear Society, will honor 10 years of Czech-American nuclear cooperation and symbolize Czech-American friendship. The event is also part of a formal celebration of the naming of Prague as the principal cultural capital of Europe in the millennial year. Medallions will be presented to Mr. Anzolini and members of the orchestra in a brief ceremony preceding the concert. The event will be attended by members of the diplomatic, scientific and academic communities.

Concert programs on the tour will feature Institute Professor John Harbison's Remembering Gatsby, a foxtrot for orchestra, Schoenberg's Verklaerte Nacht, Mahler's Symphony No. 5 and selections from Elgar's Enigma Variations.

The orchestra will return to Boston on May 30. The tour was organized by Perform America and made possible by contributions from MIT Symphony alumni/ae, corporate sponsors, private foundations and MIT.
