The eighth annual Cambridge First Day at MIT celebration will honor four Cambridge institutions on Tuesday, June 6 for their commitment to the advancement of the arts in the community.
Awards will be presented to the Dance Complex, the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, the Community Art Center and the Cambridge Community Chorus for their role in advancing the arts in Cambridge. Each will receive a $1,000 check and a framed Cambridge First Day 2000 certificate.
The program begins at 11am in the Mezzanine Lounge of the Stratton Student Center. Alan Brody, associate provost for the arts, will be the keynote speaker. Cambridge City Manager Robert W. Healy will present the 2000 awards. Mayor Anthony D. Galluccio will also speak. The awards ceremony will be followed by an informal buffet luncheon.
Established in 1993 by President Charles M. Vest, Cambridge First Day provides an opportunity for MIT to express its appreciation to the Cambridge community for the vital partnerships that exist among MIT and local businesses, public officials and residents of Cambridge. The event symbolizes the Institute's and the City's shared vision for the community.
Jointly planned and hosted by MIT and the City of Cambridge since 1997, Cambridge First Day focuses on a different theme every year. In 1993, MIT honored Cambridge businesses with whom the Institute has been working for 50 years or more; in 1994, minority-owned and women-owned businesses; in 1995, small businesses; in 1996, biotechnology companies; in 1997, entrepreneurship; in 1998, culinary arts; and in 1999, architecture.
