Walking/jogging event will benefit cancer research

The Center for Cancer Research (CCR) invites all members of the MIT community to join millions of others across the country in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, a walking/jogging event to benefit cancer research.

During MIT's Relay for Life -- which runs from Friday, May 19 at 6pm until Saturday, May 20 at 3pm at Steinbrenner Stadium -- teams of 10-12 people will take turns walking or jogging laps around the stadium.

Anyone interested in joining the planning committee, becoming a team captain, volunteering or just finding out more about Relay For Life is encouraged to attend the Relay for Life Rally on Tuesday, March 7 at the University Park Hotel at MIT (20 Sidney St.) from 6-7:30 pm. The evening will feature guest speaker Professor Jacqueline Lees from the CCR.

"The American Cancer Society is a leading force in the fight against cancer. They fund well over $1 million in research at MIT alone," said Professor Richard Hynes, director of the CCR. "I encourage everyone to come out and participate in the Relay for Life."

The event has become the American Cancer Society's largest signature event as well as the most successful national fundraiser. Relays in more than 2,500 communities raised more than $120 million nationwide last year for local programs of research, detection, education and patient services.
