Information for people with disabilities

NOTE: The previously published information on this topic is accurate and repeated below. Please note, however, that access to Killian Court will be at the direction of the Secret Service, who will secure this area at approximately 9:00am.Those arriving to Killian Court who will require assistance are encouraged to arrive as early as possible.

Degree Recipients

All degree recipients with disabilities (including temporary medical situations) which would prevent them from robing/assembling in the second floor of the Johnson Athletics Center and participating in the procession to Killian Court for the Commencement exercises are asked to contact Ted Johnson at (617) 253-3913 or e-mail tej@mit.edu by Friday, May 29 so any necessary arrangements can be made.

All doctoral degree recipients with disabilities (including temporary medical situations) which would prevent them from robing/assembling in the du Pont Center Gymnasium and participating in the procession to Rockwell Cage for the Hooding Ceremony are asked to contact Donald Ferland at 617-253-0210 or e-mail dferland@mit.edu by Friday, May 29 so that any necessary arrangements can be made.

Families/Guests

Families/guests with disabilities who require special assistance or those who have related questions may contact Barbara Roberts, MIT's Coordinator of Disabilities Services, at 253-6110 or e-mail barbarar@mit.edu. Assistive listening devices may be reserved by contacting the MIT Audiovisual Services at 617-253-2808 by Friday, 29 May. There will be American Sign Language interpretation of the opening remarks and speeches. Due to the limited number of wheelchairs available on campus, we recommend that individuals requiring wheelchairs rent them from their local source before traveling to Cambridge. Locations of accessible building entrances are indicated on the map below.

Parking

Because access to Memorial Drive may be restricted earlier than originally anticipated, parking for those with disabilities will be located on Ames Street. Staff will be available to direct guests to Killian Court from that location. In addition, if you are driving a person who requires closer access to the court, you may have that guests disembark at Ames Street, and police officers will route you back to one of the designated parking areas (East Garage, East Annex and the CRA lot). Ambassadors will be available along Ames Street to provide assistance.
