The Committee on Campus Race Relations (CCRR) is hosting "Race 2000 -- A Provocative Series on Race Relations," a series of events focusing on US racial issues and activism.
The first event on Thursday, Oct. 16 is "An Evening of Conversation with Noam Chomsky and Kathleen Cleaver," moderated by Ayida Mthembu, associate dean for counseling and support services. Professor Chomsky of linguistics and philosophy, an Institute Professor, author and anti-war activist, and Kathleen Cleaver, a lawyer and former member of the Central Committee of the Black Panther Party and Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), will discuss their own activism and that of students.
The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7pm in Rm 26-100 and will conclude with a question-and-answer period.
CCRR is also sponsoring two film screenings. "All Power To The People," a film about the Black Panther Party produced and directed by Lee Lew-Lee, will be shown on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 5pm in Rm 6-120. On the following evening, "Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media" by Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick will be shown at 5pm in Rm 4-370.
Ms. Cleaver will also head a seminar entitled "Overcoming Obstacles to Researching and Writing About the Black Panther Party" on Friday, Oct. 17 from noon-2pm in a location to be announced. Those who are interested are encouraged to see "All Power To the People" before attending the seminar.
