The Media Laboratory's first talk in its 1997-98 Perspectives series will be given by Ken Haase, Media Lab lecturer, on "Hands for the Mind: Representations in Humans and Machines." The lecture, which is open to the public, will be on Tuesday, Oct. 28th at 5 pm in the Bartos Theater (Building E15).
The ability to make decisions, learn from experience and cooperate in communities, according to Dr. Haase, depends on the use of "representations" of individual and shared experience. These representations need not obey particular canons of logic, consistency or correspondence, but they do need to serve particular purposes for the systems employing them. In his talk, Dr. Haase will focus on the study of these representations as an important methodology for science and technology.
