Dibner names new librarian

The Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology has announced the appointment of Clark A. Elliott as librarian of the Burndy Library.

The Burndy Library is a special collection of rare books, manuscript sources, and recent monographs and serials for research in the history of science and technology. It serves the reference and research needs of the resident and graduate fellows of the Dibner Institute and is open to all other students and scholars of the subject.

For the last 25 years, Mr. Elliott has been associate curator of the Harvard University Archives. He holds graduate degrees in history and library science, and has been an active contributor to the bibliographic and research literature on archival practice and the history of science.

Among Mr. Elliott's publications are Biographical Dictionary of American Science: The Seventeenth through the Nineteenth Centuries (1979) and History of Science in the United States: A Chronology and Research Guide (1996). He was also editor of the milestone Final Report of the Joint Committee on Archives of Science and Technology (1983), which helped set an agenda for the selection and preservation of documentary sources for the history of postwar science in the United States.

Mr. Elliott's current projects include co-editing a volume on the historiography of scientific commemorations, and he is engaged in a long-term exploration of the religious and aesthetic relations of 19th-century American scientists to the natural world.
