The Department of Mathematics has recognized four students for their academic accomplishments.
The Jon A. Bucsela Prize in recognition of distinguished scholastic achievement, professional promise and enthusiasm for mathematics was shared by Pramod N. Achar of Memphis, TN, who received his SB degree in mathematics with computer science in February, and Aleksey Zinger, a senior in mathematics from Sydney, Australia.
The prize was created as a memorial by the parents of Mr. Bucsela, a member of the Class of 1984 from Atlanta who died as a result of congenital heart problems during his senior year.
Andras Vasy of Budapest, Hungary, who is receiving the PhD this week, has been awarded the first Charles W. and Jennifer C. Johnson Prize for an outstanding research paper accepted in a major journal by a graduate student in mathematics. The title of the paper is "Structure of the Resolvent for Three-Body Potentials" and will be published in the Duke Mathematical Journal. This prize was established by the support of Charles (BE '55) and Jennifer Johnson.
Ioanid Rosu, a 1998 PhD candidate from Bucharest, Romania, has received the Housman Graduate Student Teaching Award, which is given to a graduate student in mathematics who has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication to teaching. The Housman Award is supported by the Charles L. (SB '70) and Holly Housman Fund.
