Dean Philip S. Khoury of the School of Humanities and Social Science has
announced the appointment of Professor Suzanne Flynn as head of the
foreign languages and literatures section, effective July 1.
She will succeed Professor Isabelle de Courtivron, who has been section
head since 1990.
In making this appointment, Dean Khoury noted that Professor Flynn is an
accomplished scholar and teacher who is also an experienced academic
administrator. She has served with distinction on numerous committees in
the Institute, including the Committee on the Curriculum, which she
chaired in 1994-95. "I expect her to maintain the high quality of
leadership that foreign languages and literatures has enjoyed these past
six years under Isabelle de Courtivron.
Dr. Flynn is widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of second-
language acquisition, and holds a joint appointment in the foreign
languages and literatures section and in the Department of Linguistics.
For many yars she has directed the section's English as a Second
Language Program.
She received the BA degree in anthropology from the University of
Massachusetts-Amherst in 1972, the MS in English education from the
University of Puerto Rico in 1974, and the MA (1980) and PhD (1983) in
linguistics from Cornell University. Among her many publications is "A
Parameter Setting Model of L2 Acquisition: Experimental Studies in
Anaphora" (1987).
