Here are profiles of MIT administrators involved in the organizational changes announced by President Vest.
JOAN F. RICE
Ms. Rice is vice president, Human Resources (a new title), with responsibilities for personnel, equal opportunity, family and work and general management of MIT's human resources. All are areas that Dr. Vest said are "critical to our future and [which] require direct attention at the vice presidential and Academic Council levels."
Ms. Rice, who joined MIT in 1972, was born and educated in Australia. From 1972-74 she was administrator of the tuition-aid program for employees. From 1974-80 she focused on training programs, first (1974-75) as office administrator and later (1975-80) as a consultant trainer, responsible for assessing needs and designing, developing and conducting training programs. In 1980 she was appointed assistant to the personnel director and was responsible for special projects and reports in labor relations and personnel services. From 1981-84 she was manager of Personnel Services and Development. In 1984 she was appointed director of personnel.
BARBARA G. STOWE
Ms. Stowe is vice president, Resource Development. She will be responsible for Individual Giving, Office of Communications and Donor Relations, Office of Development Research and Systems, Office of Foundation Relations and Development Services, Office of Corporate Relations (which includes the Industrial Liaison Program).
Ms. Stowe joined MIT in 1981. She holds the BAS in American studies (1972) from the University of Minnesota.
Until 1986 she was responsible for MIT's fundraising programs in the health-science field. From 1986-88, she was assistant dean for resource development in the School of Humanities and Social Science. In 1988 she was appointed director of foundation relations where she began a new initiative to strengthen the Institute's links with foundations. In 1991 she took on additional responsibilities for providing development services to MIT's five schools. At the same time she developed a plan that has formed the basis for a major gifts effort among alumni/ae in Europe and the Middle East.
KATHRYN A. WILLMORE
Ms. Willmore is secretary to the Executive Committee of the MIT Corporation; proposed by Dr. Vest and Corporation Chairman Paul E. Gray for election by the Corporation to the post of secretary of the MIT Corporation.
Ms. Willmore has been executive assistant to the president since 1981 and director of Public Relations Services since 1986. She will continue in those posts. She is responsible for the News Office, the Communications Office (producer of the MIT catalog, phone books and other Institute publications), the Office of Design Services, the Information and Special Events Center, the Office of Conference Services and the International Scholars Office.
She joined MIT in 1965 after receiving the AB in religion at Mount Holyoke College. Her early positions were in the administration of the Sloan School of Management and the Office of the President. She also served as assistant to the director of the Commission on MIT Education, which assessed and made recommendations regarding the educational and research missions and the governance structure of the Institute.
GLENN P. STREHLE
Mr. Strehle is treasurer and vice president for finance. He has been MIT's treasurer since July 1, 1975. In 1986 he became responsible for resource development and led the successful Campaign for the future which raised more than $700 million for the Institute.
As treasurer and vice president for finance, he is responsible for managing MIT's endowment, real estate holdings, investment portfolio and for the following areas currently reporting to Mr. Culliton: the Audit Division, the Office of the Comptroller, the Lincoln Fiscal Office, the Property Office, the Office of Financial Planning and Management, and Purchasing and Stores.
Mr. Strehle holds the SB and SM degrees from the Sloan School of Management and has been active in alumni affairs. Before joining MIT he was vice president and director of Colonial Management Associates, Inc., of Boston, an investment adviser.
JAMES J. CULLITON
Mr. Culliton is vice president for administration. He will retain responsibility for the offices of the Bursar, Student Financial Aid, Registrar and Sponsored Programs, and will assume new responsibility for the Office of Admissions, the Office of Career Services and Preprofessional Advising, the Athletic Department and the Medical Department.
He joined MIT in 1970 as assistant to the vice president and in 1973 became director of personnel services as well. He held both posts until 1978 when he became director of personnel. In 1984 he was promoted to vice president for financial operations. He has been active with the MIT rugby football club over his years at MIT.
Mr. Culliton, a 1959 graduate of the Naval Academy, served until 1964 as a naval aviator in carrier-based jet squadrons. He received the MS in industrial administration in 1966 from Carnegie-Mellon University and worked as a management consultant in India with a private Indian firm and The Ford Foundation before joining MIT.
