Construction work will begin next week on a new handicapped-accessible entrance ramp on the north side of the steps at 77 Massachusetts Ave.
The project, designed by the Boston architectural firm Tellalian Associates, is part of MIT's efforts to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It should be finished by late December.
Starting on Tuesday, Oct. 8, a number of old overgrown shrubs and trees will be removed from the future site of the ramp and new steps behind the MBTA bus shelter. Shrubs will also be removed from the south side of the steps to balance the look of the main entrance. Both sides will have new plants after construction is done.
The work will cause some daytime noise and will occupy a few parking spaces, so the food trucks will move a short distance.
