Institute places No. 1 in the discipline ranking of engineering and technology.

MIT has been ranked the No. 5 university in the world in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, which were released today.

In rankings by discipline, MIT was ranked first in the world for engineering and technology and second in life sciences and physical sciences. The Institute also tied for second in social sciences with the University of Oxford.

In last year’s overall rankings, MIT was also ranked fifth; in 2011, the Institute was ranked seventh; and in 2010, it was ranked third. The California Institute of Technology was ranked first overall in the THE rankings for the third year in a row.

The THE rankings are computed based on 13 performance indicators in five areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. The full methodology can be viewed on the THE website.
