MIT music lecturer Mark Harvey, accomplished jazz trumpeter and founding director of the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, was honored by fellow musicians and elected officials at an annual JazzBoston event held Jan. 29 at the Ryles Jazz Club.
JazzBoston, an organization of accomplished musicians dedicated to celebrating and preserving jazz, honored Harvey for his talents and contributions as trumpeter, band leader, composer, minister and educator. Cambridge Councillor Kenneth E. Reeves presented Harvey with the key to the city, and Boston and Cambridge officials declared Jan. 30, 2013 as Mark Sumner Harvey Day.
Harvey has taught a variety of jazz subjects in the Music and Theater Arts Section at MIT since 1980 and has performed as trumpeter in the United States, Mexico and Europe. He has recorded with George Russell (Blue Note Records) and Baird Hersey (Arista/Novus Records), and has performed with many jazz greats, such as Gil Evans, Claudio Roditi, Howard McGhee, Sam Rivers, Joe Carroll and Kenny Dorham, among others.
An internationally acclaimed composer, Harvey has received awards and commissions from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers; the National Endowment for the Humanities; the Organization of American Kodaly Educators; the MIT Wind Ensemble; and the Meet-the-Composer/Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Commissioning Program, among others.
