The Department of Chemistry will celebrate the completion of the three-year renovation of Building 18 with a symposium on Sept. 5. Six distinguished alumni and former postdoctoral fellows and faculty members will return to campus to participate in the all-day event in Wong Auditorium.

The Dreyfus Building, designed by I.M. Pei and built in the late 1960s, has had all its systems replaced, including air, water, electrical and fire protection. The project was one of the most logistically complex renovations ever undertaken by MIT because Building 18 remained approximately two-thirds occupied throughout construction.
In addition to improving researcher safety and conforming to current codes and accessibility standards, the project increased daylight in labs and added flexibility to lab and support areas to permit evolving research needs to be accommodated in the future.
