Vest, Brown address budget

President Charles M. Vest discussed the need for belt-tightening financial strategies for the Institute in a letter distributed to MIT faculty and staff on Tuesday.

The letter was the first in a series of discussions devoted to the subject, including a presentation by Provost Robert A. Brown at the monthly faculty meeting today (Sept. 17) at 3:30 p.m. in Room 10-250. Brown's topic is "Finances at MIT: A Preview of Fiscal Year 2005."

Vest's letter is scheduled to be posted on the web today at http://web.mit.edu/finances. A question-and-answer piece on financial issues, Tech Talk articles and other communications will be posted when available.

In future weeks, Vest, Brown, Chancellor Phillip L. Clay and Executive Vice President John R. Curry will discuss the financial issues in several venues, eliciting ideas and suggestions for ways to continue the dialogue.

Today's faculty meeting agenda also includes "A Review of Undergraduate Education" by Dean for Undergraduate Education Robert P. Redwine.

A version of this article appeared in MIT Tech Talk on September 17, 2003.
