CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Professor Ronald M. Latanision of materials science and engineering and nuclear engineering has been named to the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board by President Bush.
Latanision, director of the H.H. Uhlig Corrosion Laboratory, was one of five new members appointed on June 17.
"I'm pleased to be involved," said Latanision, who was informally approached after working on a Department of Energy review of the containment of nuclear waste. ""It is an important issue, one that I have been concerned with for a long time."
Latanision, who has been on the MIT faculty since 1974, served as a science advisor to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology while on sabbatical in 1982-83. He also has served on the advisory board of the Massachusetts Office of Science and Technology and was an education advisor to former Sen. Paul Tsongas during his 1992 campaign for president.
A Democrat, Latanision once considered running for Congress.
"We have a one-woman, one-vote rule in our house," he recalled, "and my wife voted 'No!'"
