Two longstanding programs for professional education, the Professional Institute and the Advanced Study Program, have moved to the School of Engineering.
"We see our ability to offer outstanding lifelong learning opportunities to alumni and professionals as an important part of the School's overall education mission," said Dean for Engineering Thomas Magnanti. "These two programs, together with a new distance education program now under development to offer 'Knowledge Updates,' will serve as the cornerstones of this effort." The move took place July 1.
For more than 50 years, the Professional Institute has offered week-long summer programs taught by MIT faculty. It runs about 60 programs a year for about 1,000 students.
For almost 40 years, the Advanced Studies Program has brought professionals on campus for part-time or full-time study. Each year, the program hosts about 100 students from around the world.
