Bins can be used to recycle chipboard

For those who've been wondering whether they can use their deskside recycling bins for the "cereal box" type of cardboard or the cardboard backing from pads of paper, the answer is yes to both questions.

This type of cardboard is referred to in the trade as chipboard, explained Kevin Healy, recycling coordinator in Facilities. "Most of the expanded mixed paper that MIT now recycles goes into the production of chipboard. That's one reason we no longer have to separate white paper from newspapers or other paper fiber in the recycling effort," he said.
