MIT President Charles M. Vest convened an early morning meeting Monday of top advisors from the Dean of Students' Office, the faculty leadership, the Medical Department, Campus Police and others to discuss what additional actions need to be taken in response to the situation and to plan a comprehensive review of the Institute's policies regarding the use of alcohol at the Institute.
"We must redouble our efforts to educate our community about the risks and consequences involved in drinking, and do all that we can to see that this kind of tragedy never happens again," Dr. Vest said.
Discussions about campus policies and culture and more effective ways to address the problem are being held with the leaders of all dormitories and independent living groups, other student leaders, housemasters, academic department heads and faculty advisors, and others.
Sunday night, the Presidents of the InterFraternity Council (representing 39 fraternities, sororities, and independent living groups) voluntarily canceled all events in which alcohol is involved while they review their policies.
