This past Saturday, Oct. 15, in conjunction with its game against Mount Holyoke College, the MIT field hockey team participated in a fundraising effort to benefit the Massachusetts Chapter of the Lymphoma Research Foundation. The team sold commemorative T-shirts and collected donations at the entrance to the game, in addition to a bake sale, which took place over the three preceding days.

The cause became personal for the Tech field hockey squad after learning an incoming freshman, and potential teammate, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) in June. She has since received a positive prognosis and was in attendance on Saturday to cheer on her future teammates.

In addition to their awareness efforts, the team was also able to raise more than $500 so far through their various fundraising efforts, all of which was donated to the Massachusetts chapter of the Lymphoma Research Foundation. Those interested in contributing to the team’s efforts can still do so by contacting head coach, Cheryl Silva.

NHL is a cancer that starts in cells in the lymphatic system (the disease-fighting network spread throughout your body). An estimated 65,540 men and women were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2010. Modern treatments involve chemotherapy and radiation therapy, both of which are often painful. The Lymphoma Research Foundation funds some of the most innovate research to find a cure for NHL.
