Faculty pledged $200 toward students in hunger walk

Thirty-eight students signed up and many more showed up to walk with the InterFraternity Council (IFC) in Sunday's Walk for Hunger. The students walked a total of 525 miles to raise $1,294 for Project Bread. Four faculty members pledged $200 in support of 16 of the students walking, using the web pledge form prepared by the IFC.

"These were great numbers to start future efforts," said management sophomore Daniel Yoo, the IFC community service chair. "Next year we're planning to walk in a large block wearing MIT Walk for Hunger T-shirts with other MIT groups such as faculty, alumni, staff and family walkers. We also want to solicit support from more sources such as MIT-founded companies." The special IFC web site made it easy for the MIT community to pledge support for the student walkers.

The IFC's community service committee had hoped to raise at least $3,000 in the 20-mile Walk for Hunger that supports emergency food programs in Massachusetts. More than 40,000 people participated in this year's walk, raising more than $3 million.
