This year, MIT admitted 1,604 students to its Class of 2004, representing just 15 percent of applicants.
Of those admitted, 841 are men and 763 (48 percent) are women. Forty-seven percent of last year's 1,742 admissions (19 percent of applicants) were women.
About 18 percent (17 percent last year) of the admitted students are from underrepresented minority groups: 119 African Americans, 97 Mexican Americans, 22 Native Americans and 48 Puerto Ricans. One hundred and five international students were accepted.
The class contains 46 percent valedictorians (39 percent last year), while 91 percent are in the top 5 percent of their class. Mean SAT scores are slightly higher than last year, at 721 verbal and 761 math. Sixty-one percent have at least one perfect 800 SAT score, 34 percent have two 800s, 19 percent have at least three, 7 percent have at least four, and 2 percent (or 33 students) have perfect scores on all five SAT subjects.
