Retirees association holds membership drive

Some 500 retirees have already enrolled in the 2000-01 membership drive of the Association of MIT Retirees that began last month.

Membership renewals were sent to about 1,000 retirees who have joined or been eligible for membership over the past five years, including 100 people who retired this year.

Membership is open to all retirees, regardless of length of service. The basic membership fee of $10 a year includes a copy of the Retirees Directory and occasional newsletters and mailings, such as MITAC fliers and listings of volunteer and travel opportunities.

The association sponsors activities -- day trips, seminars of interest to retirees, etc. -- that offer opportunities for former colleagues to get together and stay in touch with one another and with the Institute. On the schedule for the upcoming year are a tour of the Wang Center with lunch at the Jacob Wirth restaurant (October 23) and a seminar on the psychology of aging scheduled for the spring.

For retirees living outside New England who can't participate in the seminars and social events, there is a "directory only" membership available for $5. With that membership, retirees receive a copy of the directory, with their names included in it, but no other mailings.

Retirees who would like to receive a membership form should call the association's office at (617) 253-7910 and leave their names and addresses.
