Thirty members of the MIT chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon have been expelled or suspended by the national fraternity as a result of a reorganization set in motion in November when the national organization suspended the chapter.
The reorganization was precipitated by a series of events culminating last October when several MIT members brought large quantities of alcohol on a weekend visit to an out-of-state chapter. The national organization suspended all members pending the results of individual interviews with an alumni board. As a result of that process, 11 were reinstated and now live in the house at 518 Beacon St. in Boston.
The chapter, which voluntarily banned alcohol in December 1997, will be supervised by the alumni board for a year, at which time the national organization will decide whether to return it to full status.
