Civil rights attorney and political activist Lezli Baskerville will be the keynote speaker at MIT's 24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration breakfast at 8am on Friday in Walker Memorial's Morss Hall.
This year's theme is "'The Same Old Bone': The Campaign Against Affirmative Action." Ms. Baskerville, a graduate of Rutgers University and Howard University Law School, is general counsel to the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.
President Charles Vest, who hosts the breakfast with his wife, Rebecca, will also speak and introduce the Leadership Award winners: Ito Otitigbe, a junior in mechanical engineering; Lynda M. Jordan, a Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Professor who received the PhD from MIT in 1985; and Tobie Weiner, an administrative assistant in political science. Provost Joel Moses will recognize the MLK Visiting Professors.
Civil engineering graduate student Casandra Strudwick and freshman Mishone Donelson will be the student speakers. Corina Serna, a junior at the Sloan School, will be the mistress of ceremonies.
The MIT Black Gospel Choir will perform at the breakfast and the documentary film "Remembrance of Martin" will be shown starting at 7am as the guests arrive.
