Five MIT fraternities on Beacon Street in Boston were cited for violations by Boston police Saturday night for double parking, improperly displayed and unposted licenses, blocking the sidewalk and failing to answer questions. MIT Campus Police, summoned to the scene by Boston police at about 5:30pm, were advised that hiring detail officers from that department could alleviate the situation.
Campus Police observed students socializing at barbecues in front of the houses. "The students were gathering in small clusters and moving along the sidewalk to visit other fraternity houses," Campus Police Sgt. Janet C. Popp said in her report. "The music from the boom boxes was not loud and the small groups were orderly and social in behavior."
The fraternities cited were Sigma Phi Epsilon, Delta Upsilon, Theta Chi, Phi Kappa Sigma and Sigma Chi.
Boston police also reported complaints about people rapelling down walls of MIT fraternity houses on Bay State Road and Beacon Street. The activity stopped when Campus Police advised members to desist.
