Chemistry honors students at annual recognition dinner

A number of undergraduate chemistry majors were honored for their achievements and service at the Chemistry Recognition Dinner, which featured Nobel laureate Elias J. Corey (SB '48, PhD) as the guest speaker. The dinner was held at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge on May 13th.

The Hypercube Scholar Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of computers in teaching: Timothy Shiau, a senior from Lexington, MA. The Chemistry Undergraduate Service Award for outstanding service to the department by an undergraduate: Maria Manzoni, a senior from Philadelphia, PA. The Merck Index Award for outstanding scholarship: Janelle Brown, a senior from Warren, NJ; Raquel Lieberman, a junior from Forest Hills, NY; and Timothy McAnaney, a senior from Darien, CT.

The American Institute of Chemists Award presented in recognition of outstanding achievement, ability, leadership, and character was awarded to John Gavenonis, a senior from Larksville, PA. The Chemistry Undergraduate Research Award for outstanding research in the field of chemistry by an undergraduate went to seniors Christina Eng of Wayne, NJ; Ms. Manzoni, and Laura Turculet of Enfield, CT.

The Frederick D. Greene Teaching Award for outstanding teaching in chemistry by an undergraduate went to Mr. Shiau. Two seniors received the Alpha Chi Sigma Award for achievement in research, scholarship, and service to the department: Steven Klei from Massapequa Park, NY, and Michelle Machacek from Acton, MA.

The following chemistry majors were noted for their work as educators, both at MIT and in the community elementary schools. Noted for their teaching were Songpon Deechongkit, a junior from Washington, DC; Jennifer Espinosa, a senior from San Jose, CA; Sarah Folscroft, a senior from Kansas City, KS; Jennifer Lee, a senior from Sylvania, OH; Ms. Lieberman; Ms. Manzoni; Nathan Scott, a junior from Guilford, CT; Mr. Shiau, and Jason Wong, a junior from Clifton, VA.

Noted for their tutoring were Spencer Behr, a junior from Scarsdale, NY; James Chen, a sophomore from Naperville, IL; Qinghao Chen, a sophomore from Norman, OK; Janet Chieh, a junior from Middletown, NJ; Victoria Gomez, a sophomore from Wayne, PA; Cynthia Liang, a sophomore from Lexington, MA; Ms. Manzoni; Yelena Margolin, a junior from West Hartford, CT; Marco Mena, a junior from Laredo, TX; Juliet Midgley, a senior from Carmichael, CA; Shirley Mihardja, a junior from Daly City, CA; Preeyanuch Sangtrirutnugul, a sophomore from Washington, DC; Chris Thomas, a junior from Hugo, MN; and Alice Wang, a sophomore from Sylvania, OH.

Noted for the Chemistry Magic Show were Joshua Bittker, a junior from Katonah, NY, Mr. Gavenonis, Ms. Lee and Mr. Shiau.
