Provost Joel Moses has announced the appointment of Professor Lawrence S. Bacow of urban studies and planning and Associate Professor Bonnie A. Berger of mathematics to named professorships.
Profesor Bacow is the second holder of the Lee and Geraldine Martin Professorship for a five-year term. The chair was created with a contribution from the Martin Foundation, Inc., to support research and education related to studies of the environment.
Dr. Bacow, professor of law and environmental policy, does research in the fields of environmental policy and regulation, risk assessment, real estate finance, regulation of the development process, and bargaining and negotiation theory. A member of the MIT faculty since 1977, he was chair of the faculty from 1995-97. He was director of the Center for Real Estate (CRE) from 1990-92 and CRE's director of education and research from 1983-85.
Professor Bacow has been a visiting professor at several universities and is the author of four books and numerous articles. He received the SB (1972) in economics from MIT, the JD (1976) from Har-vard Law School, and the MPP (1976) and PhD (1978) from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
Professor Berger has been selected to hold the Samuel A. Goldblith Career Development Professorship for a three-year term beginning July 1. The chair was established with gifts from friends of Professor Goldblith, professor emeritus of food science and former vice president for resource development.
Professor Berger's research interests include computational molecular biology, algorithms, protein folding and genomics. She received the BA in computer science from Brandeis University in 1983 and the MS and PhD degrees from MIT in 1986 and 1990, respectively.
