MIT has announced the formation of the Genevieve McMillan and Reba
Stewart Professorship in the Study of Women in the Developing World. The
professorship, the first of its kind at a major American research
university, will be located in the School of Humanities and Social
Science.
Professor Philip S. Khoury, dean of the School of Humanities and Social
Science, said the chair was established with a gift from Genevieve
McMillan in honor of Mrs. McMillan's friend, the late Reba Stewart. Ms.
Stewart was an arts educator and an accomplished painter. Mrs. McMillan
is herself a prominent art collector with a long-time interest in Africa
and the Middle East.
According to Dean Khoury, the person appointed to the chair "will be a
scholar of international distinction in the humanities and/or social
sciences whose scholarship and teaching focuses on women in the
developing world and especially on women in the Middle East and North
Africa."
A search committee for this appointment composed of senior faculty in
the School of Humanities and Science has recently been formed. The
professorship is expected to be filled by July 1996.
