Provost Mark S. Wrighton has announced the appointment of Assistant Professor Stephen P. Bell of the Department of Biology to the Robert A. Swanson Career Development Professorship in the Life Sciences.
Professor Bell, who joined MIT at the start of the current term, holds the BA degree (1985) from Northwestern University and the PhD (1990) from the University of California at Berkeley. The Swanson Chair, established in 1986 by Robert A. Swanson, a 1969 MIT graduate and co-founder and chief executive officer of Genentech, Inc., recognizes junior faculty who show exceptional promise of making important contributions to the field of life sciences throughout their careers.
From 1991 until coming to MIT earlier this year Professor Bell carried out postdoctoral research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory under Dr. Bruce Stillman, studying the mechanisms controlling the initiation of DNA replication in yeasts.
