Four MIT faculty members were inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences last month.
The new MIT fellows are: Dr. Robert A. Brown, Warren K. Lewis Professor and head of the Department of Chemical Engineering; Dr. Richard O. Hynes, professor of biology, director of the Center for Cancer Research and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator; Dr. Robert S. Langer, Germeshausen Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. David E. Pritchard, professor of physics.
In addition, three alumni also were elected. They are: Dr. Frederic L. Holmes, Avalon Professor of the History of Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine; Dr. Thomas Kailath, Hitachi America Professor of Engineering at Stanford University, and Dr. Robert J. Shiller, Stanley B. Resor Professor of Economics at Yale University and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge.
The election brings to 216 the number of active and emeriti faculty members who have been elected to Academy Fellowship.
For more than two centuries, the Academy, located in Cambridge, has brought together the country's leading figures from universities, government, business and the creative arts to exchange ideas and to promote knowledge for the public interest.
