Professor David N. Wormley, MIT's associate dean of engineering, will become dean of Penn State's College of Engineering, effective July 1. Penn State President Joab Thomas announced the appointment March 21.
Dean Wormley, a mechanical engineer recognized widely for his research in control systems, transportation systems and fossil fuel energy systems, has been a member of the MIT faculty since 1967, the year in which he received his PhD from the Institute. He also holds the SB (1962) and the SM (1964) from MIT.
He headed the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1982 until becoming associate dean.
Dean of Engineering Joel Moses said, "Dave and I made a wonderful team for the past year and a half. I am certain he will be an excellent dean at Penn State."
