Michelle Penn-Marshall, vice president for research at Hampton University, speaks with ABC News reporter Jade Lawson about how Hampton consulted with MIT researchers on the design of a mobile Covid-19 vaccination unit. "MIT was the first school to have a mobile unit. I contacted MIT when I saw that in the news this summer and said, 'Hey, how can we do this?' They took the time and gave me a one-hour briefing on the mobile unit, and also they gave me information regarding testing efficiency," says Penn-Marshall.

"You remember when we go to election polls, the voting booth, during elections, we get a little sticker that says 'I Voted'" says Prof. Sinan Aral of a new study that finds hearing about people who have received the Covid-19 vaccine can increase vaccine acceptance rates. "You should think of this as a very similar type of strategy. The reason we get that sticker that says 'I Voted' is that social proof motivates people to join in. And so if we got a sticker or put out a video or put out a message that said, 'I got vaccinated,' it would have the same effect for the same reasons."

Prof. Alex “Sandy” Pentland emphasizes the need for improving speaking/hearing systems on laptops by incorporating better microphones in an article for The Wall Street Journal. “Research shows that the audio quality is just as important as video quality when judging the overall “quality” and “presence” of the conference experience,” Pentland writes.

Writing for The Boston Globe, Bruce Walker, director of the Ragon Institute, and his colleagues on the executive committee of the Massachusetts Consortium for Pathogen Readiness (MassCPR) underscore the importance of scientific collaboration. “The MassCPR model serves as a road map for building a global Apollo-like project that brings together governmental and nongovernmental entities, academic institutions, industry, and philanthropists to ensure the generation of knowledge, the sharing of data, and the equitable distribution of resources across the globe in preparation for the next pandemic,” they write. “Collaboration is the antidote to even the most virulent future threats.”

Prof. Ruth Lehmann, director of the Whitehead Institute, speaks with STAT reporter Elizabeth Cooney about the importance of fundamental scientific research. “There are so many areas that are so important for science,” says Lehmann. “One is supporting fundamental research. But then there are other areas like diversity and disparities.”

New Yorker reporter Benjamin Wallace-Wells spotlights new research from the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, which shows “just telling people the accurate immunization rates in their country increased, by five per cent, the number who said that they would get the vaccine.”

Dr. Francis Collins, director of the NIH, spotlights new research by Galit Alter of the Ragon Institute of MIT and Harvard. Alter and her colleagues found that “the antibody responses in kids and adults with mild Covid-19 are quite similar. However, the complications seen in kids with MIS-C and adults with severe Covid-19 appear to be driven by two distinctly different types of antibodies involved in different aspects of the immune response.”

Writing for Bloomberg, Prof. Carlo Ratti and Saskia Sassen of Columbia University explore how to help rebuild cities in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. “We have the duty to recapitalize our cities — not in financial terms, but in terms of their ‘living’ capital, shoring up their human reserves,” they write.

Elisabeth Reynolds, executive director of the MIT Task Force on the Work of the Future, speaks with Soledad O’Brien about how to ensure workers aren’t left behind in the transition to a more digital workforce. “If we can find pathways to the middle where we do see growth and demand for workers - construction, healthcare, the trades, manufacturing, places where we are seeing opportunities - that move can really be a new lifeline for people,” says Reynolds. 

Writing for The Los Angeles Times, Profs. Sinan Aral and Dean Eckles explore how “proactively emphasizing the vaccine acceptance of others — including our community leaders, public figures and even our neighbors — can help boost vaccination rates to the level needed to end the pandemic."

Bloomberg reporter Ashlee Vancee spotlights the work of alumnus Youyang Gu SB ’15, MEng’19, who developed a forecasting model for Covid-19 last spring that was widely considered to be one of the most accurate models of the pandemic’s trajectory. “The novel, sophisticated twist of Gu’s model came from his use of machine learning algorithms to hone his figures,” writes Vancee.

Graduate student Carmelo Ignaccolo speaks with Forbes contributor Rebecca Ann Hughes about his decision to move back to his hometown in Sicily during the Covid-19 pandemic and his work helping a local organization map networks of remote working hubs, as part of an effort to help support the local economy. “It was a nice idea of combining work but also local support for communities which have been left behind, especially in southern Italy,” says Ignaccolo.

Washington Post reporter Christopher Ingraham spotlights a study co-authored by research affiliate Christos Makridis that finds communities with higher levels of interconnectedness and communal trust experienced less severe Covid-19 outbreaks in 2020. Makridis and his co-authors found “when individuals have a greater concern for others, they are more willing to follow hygienic practices and social distancing.”

Second-year student Darren Lim speaks with KUOW about his work developing a website aimed at making it easier for Washington state residents to book appointment for Covid-19 vaccines. The website “shows which providers in Washington state have vaccines available, and then allows you to click through to their websites to make an appointment.”
